I've worked with much larger scanned 6x6 slides and my 3 year-old PC has no problems.
If you want 36MP NEF you get big files.
Why not shoot just JPEG, or NEF+JPEG? With the latter you can view the JPEGs first, and so you can cull a lot of crap before working on the RAW files.
Some people shoot 100% RAW. This is complete nonsense. I shoot way less than 50% RAW and have no problems.
So, get the D800 and keep the D300/D300s.
That's what I plan to do.
