I guess we all aim for the best image quality, don't we? There you have the reason to set the D7000 to ISO 100. At least that's what I usually do: choose the lowest ISO setting possible.

I usually shoot in aperture priority mode (unless I want to freeze action or aim to get motion blur), so I manually choose aperture and ISO and let the camera meter for the correct shutter times. If those turn out to be too long to reliably get blur-free images I'm actually quite happy to have something "silly" and "meaningless" at hand I can adjust in steps I'm used to (in this case ISO stops).

Nothing silly or meaningless to adjust the ISO setting to shorten exposure times! Bingo, that is my point! It is silly and meaningless to view ISO as something that is set, was my point... since it is not about sensitivity.

With film, things were very different.

We chose film to be the best compromise between resolution and speed. If we needed speed, we seriously had to drop resolution. And vice versa. After the choice of film, we had NO possibility to change ISO (to change sensitivity) from shot to shot. The film's sensitivity ruled exposure time. And the film's sensitivity also dictated the image's resolution.

With digital, things are changed. When we choose ISO 400 or ISO 100, resolution does not change in any meaningful way. We also are not fixed in exposure time, as from shot to shot we simply can change the amplification of the signal.

Another interesting aspect about film was/is that because grain (film sensitivity) had such an impact on resolution, film format choice was a bigger factor. ISO 100 film on 135 format (for instance my Nikkormat FTn) would give much less resolution than ISO 100 film on 120 format (like my medium format 9x6 AGFA camera).

The same is not necessarily true for digital: a 12mp MFT (E-P1 for instance) with equivalent settings will give more or less the same resolution as a 12mp FF (like a D3 for instance). Yet both can be set at the same ISO setting.
