the primary advantage of the evf (from a design perspective) is that it allows for the removal of the mirror (and the negatives of using a flipping mirror). The evf also offer advantages in the area of manual focus and dark scenes. I believe today that the om-d has the evf with the fastest refresh (a common complaint mentioned in this thread with regards to nex-7 is less prevalent on the om-d) but as noted it is still a long ways from an ofv (though I do think it will improve over time).

Anyways if they can produce a full frame camera the size of a g2 or g1 (or even m camera) I think it will offer a certain appeal to a crowd than if they produce a 6d look alike (to be fair pentax cameras have historically trended on the smaller size). Also with the lack of a mirror box pentax has the option of producing stellar lenses in the 7-35mm range; while such can be done with a mirror box (ala contax c/y 21mm) it is very expensive and tends to lead to very large lenses due to retro focus design.
