Many people have reported to very successfully use f8 on the 5D mk III in forums like dpreview. Either with the newer Kenko 1.4x TC's and f5.6 lenses (which require no taping of any pins) or with taping pins from other reporting 1.4x TCs. So it should be no problem with the 5D mk III.
The whole AF system from the 5D mk III is anyway way more powerful/accurate than that of the 50D or 7D, so that may contribute to a better reliability, as you call it.
