Thanks everyone - the choice is now down to 100-400 and the 400. As I am not in the market for a second body just yet, I am leaning towards the 100-400 but am aware of the superior picture quality of the 400 f5.6. So it really comes down to image quality vs convenience (Although I know the 100-400 is a very good compromise), but before I make my decision I am having the two on loan for a week to test them and see which one suits me better.
And to answer the TC debate that sparkled in the thread. I am not that good of a photographer (yet <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> so I wouldn't even try BIF with the 400 with a TC. I do have a 1.4X Extender for my 70-200 and would probably use it for static subjects or where I have enough time to manually focus.
Thanks again everyone it was enlightening.
BTW wim I really like the photos you posted, especially the fly, that's impressive shooting. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Best regards,
Jonas.
