Actually, when it comes to silicon, the size of the sensor has a large impact on the design therefore the yield with a high pixel density (like that of a crop sensor) will be much less than the yield with a smaller pixel density. This probably explains why FF sensors are rarely at the same pixel density as the equivalent generation crop sensors. Of course, this is purely conjecture on my part...
