I agree... One can observe differences on MTF charts (close-up distances vs. infinity), but in practical terms I believe it is negligable.
Before coming to MTF data for close-ups vs. infinity, I think one should check other specs of the lens based on the purpose of use. For example, I personally wouldn't use a 150mm macro lens for portraits, just because I don't like contrasty portraits and apply additional post processing steps to correct it... Also my 105mm macro lens cannot render a decent bokeh when used for subject distances other than close-ups.
