Standard Zoom
Oh wow, thanks Wim

quite a comprehensive answer. That's good stuff, I'll consider it.

Hi Andreas,

The top standard zooms for FF are the 24-70 F/2.8L, the 24-70 F/2.8L II, and the 24-105 F/4L IS when it comes to Canon. For APS-C that would be the 15-85 F/3.5-F5.6 IS or the 17-55 F/2.8 IS. If you need a faster aperture, go for the F/2.8s, if you prefer a lighter lens, go for the slower ones. In case of FF, take the 24-105l if you need IS <img src='<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />. I've shot with and tested all of the above, andowned both 24-105L and 24-70L (preferred the 24-105L myself).

These lenses are all good, although personally, I prefer the rendering of the L-glass.

Having said that, I really prefer primes over zooms, but that is just my preference. If you are considering primes as well, I'd recommend the 35 F/1.4L, the new 40 F/2.8 STM, or the 50 F/1.2L, with my persomal preference gointo the latter. For APS-C I would consider the 35 F/1.4L or the 24 F/1.4L, and both the older version as the newer 24L II will do in that case. My personal preference goes to the 24L, and that is because I think that the 24L in either version renders nicer than the 35L does, especially in dark circumstances, and because I just don't gel with 35 mm, not on APS-C and not on FF. On FF I like both standard normal FF (50 mm), as a slightly shorter standard FL (40-45 mm), and on APS-C the 24L just fits in that picture (approximately the same AoV as a 40 mm lens on FF). I have owned and/or tested all but the new 40 mm mentioned above.

Of course there are other options besides the top Canon lenses as well, but generally speaking I am not too fond of their rendering. YMMV, however.

Kind regards, Wim
