I wouldn't worry about having to have the best optics. What many (apparently including DPR) dont get, is the inverse reciprocal laws of optics for system resolution.



Since even the not-so-good lenses are capable of at least centre resolutions higher than the D800's resokution, the D800 sensor is still the limiting factor. At a little over 100 lp/mm it still means that a system becomes lens limited only when the lens resolution drops below this value. Generally speaking that is at or around F/16, when diffraction limits become about 100 lp/mm. At 100 lp/mm for sensor and lens, system resolution is 50 lp/mm, which is more than we ever managed in the darkroom as advanced amateurs, and is in the best pros range anyway. Note: all of this Rayleigh criterion based.



DPR is only right in so far that if one would want the maximum benefit from this sensor, one would need the best lenses. However, this is more about lenses providing good contrast, good tramsparancy, fewer and less optical aberrations rather than resolution. Obviously this is also true for smaller resolution sensors, just that for greater enlargements of prints and hence higher MP sensors this becomes more important.
