Many have saves their lens with that useless piece of plastic acting as crumple zone/bumper. My 70-200mm f4 L USM is one of them (fell/tumbled off a flight of stairs, stopping on the concrete with cheap carpet floor below... Lens hood split on the side, lens is healthy). My 12-24mm f4 from Tokina was happy it had a hood mounted one time too.
Do get the hood.
