Tamron AF SP 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di VC USD for Canon 5D
#14
Back to the topic.

Rainer I’ve pulled the trigger to buy Tamron 70-300 4.0..5,6 VC for my APS-c Cammeras.

Positive point.

1. Good IQ

- In development announce Tamron mention that will deliver class leading IQ.

- MTF chart on Tamron site seems to be good.

- Internet reviews confirm that too.

- Local Dutch photo magazine confirms that too.

- It seems that sigmas FLD and tamrons XLD glass redefines the lens IQ standards. Probably this glass is coming from Hoya.

2. Good Build quality

– BQ looks better that canon 70-300 IS.

- I like the tamron SP finish.

- acceptable weight – for 400Euro I can get second hand Sigma/Tamron 70-200/2,8 for 400Euro but they are twice as heavy.

3. AF

- it allows MF at any time.

- AF ring works fine. Personally I find it even better that Canon 70-200 IS 4.0. It rotates more degree then canon 70-200 is and 70-300.

- USD works just fine. I’ve compared this lens with canon 70-300 IS usm. Tamrom seems to be a little bit faster but it shakes around settling AF distance.

3. VC is OK.

Limitations

1. No AF limiter – eg. 1,5m…Infinity and 3….Inf. Even that USD and MF works just fine

2. VC has only one mode. I don’t know how this lens will perform by panning. E.g. Birth in fly photography.

Warnings!

- The MTF charts show lower IQ at extreme corners by FF.
