The 5D Mark II was especially popular by many people that had no true interest in a DSLR before: Videographers. I heard many more video people having a 5D Mark II and praise it than photographers. Certainly it was and is a success among photographers as well, but I think the excess demand was due to filmmakers.
And it's funny, because these guys seem to be fond of Nikon lenses as well. While the photographers quarrel about their systems and point fingers at each other from their priggish positions, the video people just took the best of both worlds: true HD video on a FF sensor with shallow DOF features impossible with any camcorder and superb manual focus lenses.
