Yes, those were the days. My first online experience was with a 2400 kBaud modem and Compuserve (which was even pre-Usenet). Their first invoice was a terrible shock <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
However even Usenet started out flat and it took a while until news readers offered really usable threaded views (I remeber FreeAgent as one of the first with really usable threaded view on Windows).
Even today, some prefer a flat view and this leads to the same issue we face here: to suit both, careful selective quoting should be used.
