When I compare the old dp x Merrill results to what I can get out of a D850 or Z 7, the advantage decreased With the D800 the comparison went in favor of the Foveon sensor - at base ISO. But with a D850 the disadvantages outweigh the small benefit in terms of color and sharpness. What remains, however, is the use for landscape and the lightweight of 2 Merrills against one D850 with heavy lenses. And even that is going to fade away once Nikon sells their 85/1.8 S.
A Z 8 is rumored with 60 MP and sensor shift, a Z 9, 5 and 3 are also rumored. At best, the Sigma fp Foveon would be a landscape body for people investing in L-mount and having a Panasonic S1 for normal work / high ISO and movie.
