It's a very popular lens.
I tried it and found it was very decent with some limitations clearly outlined in this review.
I think the naming is better than with numbers since it helps us now the differences, at the same time the optical formula is the same.
Canon listened to their customers and updated the lens build quality.
I was between this one and 15-85 as an all-around lens.
Finally I went for the 15-85 mainly for build quality and USM, if this version was available most likely I would have gone the other way.
