Car photography?
#1
There's a "classic and modern" car show about 10 minutes walk from my house starting in about an hour. While I like watching Top Gear I think that's about the limit of my interest in cars, but debating bringing the cameras along for a look. Then realising I know nothing about car photography. Chances are it'll be too busy with people for clear whole car shots, so I might have to focus more on details? I'm just guessing here... maybe a polariser would help too? Given the current weather, light is rather diffuse anyway.

Thinking of taking the 7D2 with 15-85 as main, backup 5D2 and Sigma 50A, and a macro in the bag. Ticket includes access to gardens and to be honest I'll probably find bug hunting there more interesting... Smile

Candid shots? I'm not a huge fan of catching people without telling them at whatever funny thing they are doing, but I admit, I do that sometimes as well. It's too tempting. There will be lots of people and lots of cameras, so I think, everybody going to such an event is aware about the "risk" becoming a model.

In my bag would also be a 14-24, but with the garden in mind, I also doubt to spend lot of time with stupid cars  Big Grin

Just packing now... 7D2 + 15-85, 10-18, 8mm fisheye. 5D2 only gets the 50A with 150mm macro can go on either. Sun has come out now. Where's my polariser? There it is, along with a 10 stop ND... Smile

Got back not long ago.

Good: 7D2 + 15-85 + polariser. I used that the most, dabbling a little with the 10-18 and 8mm fisheye, but didn't really do much with the latter.

Bad: 5D2 + 50A. Silly mistake 1: I didn't pack a suitable ND filter so couldn't often use it wide open. Even when I did, I didn't really have a use for that shallow depth of field and found myself mostly around f/2.8 before giving up and going back to the 7D.

Good: 5D2 + 150mm f/2.8. It took some patience but there was a single mini far enough away from cars next to it, and also with a clear background. Probably the only car there I could take in isolation. I started with the 7D -15-85, but then moved back to repeat with the 5D combo for a more narrow background. Took some time to find gaps free of people both in front and behind the car but I got some. I aperture bracketed to make sure.

Bad: 7D2 + 15-85 + 10 stop ND. I didn't bring a tripod and didn't see any suitable solid surfaces I could rest the camera on. Well, they might get upset if I used the top of a car Smile So I tried using my camera bag to get it off the ground a little and tried some wide angle shots. All failed from movement. I even tried 10s delay but all the shots had camera motion blur. IS was off, and I had manually focused. Bit of a shame as the "blur out the moving people" effect seemed to be working.

After that I went to the gardens, which were almost empty. I don't think many people realise it was included in the ticket, or if it was even there at all. Lots of flowers with lots of butterflies and bees out.

Gotta rehydrate before I start to look at what I got.
