Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM officially announced now

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/p..._f_1_8_stm

The MTFs seem to be virtually identical to the old 50mm f/1.8 II

So we got ...

- better circular aperture (7 vs 5 non-circular)

- metal mount vs plastic

- STM vs micro motor

- better coating

- better min focus (0.35m vs 0.45m)

- nicer focus ring

And it remains very affordable

Soon in this theater here, of course

Nice update all round, MTF comparison elsewhere suggests the optical formula isn't significantly changed, other than maybe allowing for close® focusing. I found the AF motor on the old one rather hit and miss so going STM should help a lot.

To me the biggest wow is it coming in at the same nominal price... but it does imply the old one might go on fire sale when the new one hits.
