If the block diagrams are available as "press images" there would be no issue but this isn't really done too often.
But in other countries, (embedded) linking does not violate copyright... And then there is such a thing as "fair use". So, all in all that german judge was a bit... strange.

He was not.

Usually in eBay i.e. is a lot of copyright violation by traders who don't bother to make own pictures, so they're making money with the work of other people. You might find that familiar but I don't get used to that practice.

On the other side, there was a German website with cooking recipes and watersigned/coded pictures to track them after copying. Not visibly - that was part of their "business model". Each time one was "stealing" a picture from them, the "thieve" got an unpleasant letter from a lawyer. In that case, the same law was used to make a lot money out of a comparatively low damage for the right owner.

After all, those construction diagrams vary at different manufacturers, so the question about the benefit for PZ readers of those diagrams remains.

Countries do have different interpretations so it is easier to play safe ratherthan be the victim of get tough campaign by a company that considers it is being taken advantage of

" Fair Use " provisions for review or editorial uses can allow for preproduction of up to 10% of a published article in support of genuine commentary. But the risk as has been pointed out that a judge with an exordinary high opinion of their own legal genius will decide that TV or internet etc is different .
