Since AF in cameras with image sensor based AF is purely software algorithm based (provided they use lenses designed for contrast AF commands (small fast steps)), it is only natural that one can speed up AF via a firmware update. 

Sensor readout speed is also a big part and ofter is hardware limited.


Processing power and available hardcoded functions also limit implementing better AF software.
