It works just like other lenses with a focus limiter (usually just tele lenses and macro lenses).

With the focus limiter off, the lens focusses through the entire range. With the focus limiter on, the lens focusses from infinity down to 3 meters. The reason for the limiting is when the lens is OOF enough, the camera/lens will start to search for focus. With the entire focus range this takes longer than with a limited focus range. The focus limiter will make acquiring focus when used as tele lens faster, depending on the situation. For close up focussing you will need to switch the focus limiter off.
