New Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f4 VR without the focus breathing
#45

Well, whatever we or video people call it: the 70-200/4 VR does have focus breathing in my book. It changes the AOV considerably during focusing.

Now, the big surprise is, however: unlike on the 70-200/2.8 VR II (and the Sigma 70-200/2.8 OS) the AOV decreases when focusing closer.

It should not have been a surprise to you, <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> as I have illustrated the same thing with my 70-200mm f4 L USM (and I have pointed out earlier in this thread that the Nikon 70-200mm f4 VR has similar specs) <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

All Canon 70-200mm's show a narrowing of the FOV, as do the old Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR and the 80-200mm f2.8 (just about all 70/80-200's do, except the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR II and Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 OS, which show a widening of the FOV).

The confusing part is that people think that focal length is 100% linked to FOV, but it is not. If the focal length stays the same when focussing close, the FOV narrows.

Indeed, the focus breaths with the 70-200mm f4 (Canon or Nikon), but not in a negative way for stills photography (you do not lose FOV possibilities). For film/video it still is not desirable (one does not want to have a scene grow or shrink while the lens goes to a focus range).

A reason video lenses are so expensive is because the focal length has to change the right amount in order to have the FOV remain the same through the focus range.
