Canon EOS 1D X firmware update for f8 AF

Do that on a 5D3 and I'll buy one. I know, there's no f/8 AF precedence below 1 series... but I can still dream.

There is no real reason for Canon not to implement it in the 5D mk III firmware... But you can use f8 anyway with the 5D mk III, Just make sure you tape off the right pin (in needed, and use the center point. A bigger thing that should be brought to the 5D mk III is the red AF point light implementation of this new 1D X firmware.

The tape trick never worked reliably if at all on other bodies I've tried it on (50D/7D). Have to say I never tried it on the 5D2 though...

Personally I don't care about illuminated AF points.

Many people have reported to very successfully use f8 on the 5D mk III in forums like dpreview. Either with the newer Kenko 1.4x TC's and f5.6 lenses (which require no taping of any pins) or with taping pins from other reporting 1.4x TCs. So it should be no problem with the 5D mk III.

The whole AF system from the 5D mk III is anyway way more powerful/accurate than that of the 50D or 7D, so that may contribute to a better reliability, as you call it.

It's more due to the individual points than the overall system, who knows how they perform at f/8? My general attempts with the tape trick, even fixed on centre point only, generally resulted in lots of seeking and little locking, so to me was worse than using MF in live view (fun at 800mm hand held!). It doesn't matter what they do with all the other points on the 5D3 system, since its just the centre point (possibly with assist) that is now workable at f/8. I think we have to assume they designed it with f/8 in mind, but did not release it initially due to some firmware issues they have now resolved.

Or tried to see if they'd get away with cutting it for the sake of getting people to buy more expensive glass, and then reconsidered for whatever reason.

April next year the 5D mk III will get a bigger firmware update, which will also include the f8 AF settings.
