I have the Kenko Pro 1.4xTC and I've tried it with the two pins taped. Hopeless for BIF. When it does occasionally work (in very good light, as you say) it's very hit-and-miss - no good for fast action. Not a very good solution for the OP. The earlier Tamron TC fared better according to dpreview birders.
