I did not know we were talking birds IN FLIGHT with any TC <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> . Like I said too, only try to use the center AF point.

As you can see (from the link I provided), many people are successful with the 400mm f5.6 with an 1.4x TC with subjects that are NOT flying around. The newer Kenkos do NOT need pin taping (they let the camera know that they are there, but somehow the camera does not disable the AF...).

What you write about the Tamron TC does not make sense. Either it is an 1.4 TC or it is not. All 1.4x TC's influence aperture in exactly the same way. The ones that let the camera/lens combination know that they are there, allow the camera to adjust AF speed. The ones that do not do that (your Kenko Pro with taped off pins, the Tamron) have no influence on the AF proceedings at all, besides turning AF points blind due to the smaller aperture.

What does matter is which camera body you are using.
