End of the Pen E-P?
#1
I was locking forward to see the OM-D technology emerge in a Pen. It seems it won't come in an E-P though. It seems that got squashed between the OM-D and the E-PL.

So far I have seen little comment on this - as in general the new Pens seem to do little head lines. Looking back at the Lumix GX that was also quietly received. Is the time of serious Pen-style cams over? (Last years fashion?)

What do you think? Thanks.

Have a look at the NEX-6 - future Pen E-Ps/GX bodies are bound to feature integrated EVFs. Pana has now a 600 Euro gap between the G5 and the GH3, a GX2 with integrated EVF would fit nicely into this void. It would be good if Pana keeps a "high-end" rangefinder-style EVF-less GX1-like line of models though.

Hi Sammy,

Thanks for joining. I had a look on dpreview and looking at their size comparion of the NEX-6 to the Lumix GX1 is actually quite surprising. The NEX has a large sensor, a build in EVF and is only slightly larger. I see what you mean. On the other hand there are camers with build in finders in the mFT camp, but everyone seems to have settled on a pseudo SLR design (E-M5, G5, GH3).

From your answer, I take you also think the days of enthusiast finder-less cams are over (the E-P1/GF-1 was huge) and now this market demands a build in finder.

Perhaps I need to warm up to an E-M5 after all <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Thanks again

Joachim, I think the fact that Olympus refreshed only the EPL & EPM and not the E-P line has more to do with them not wanting to come up with the same design as previous E-P's with just an E-M5 sensor (it had touch screen already, etc,...). I think they need more time for at least two reasons : 1*redesign properly the E-P & 2*give some air to the OM-D so that the EP doesn't compete with it even if I think the OMD line centered "faux dslr" style will remain the only design featuring the newer&large shutter&IS unit (explaining the centered hump) for a little while. A proper differentiator and simply because it wouldn't fit, IMHO.

So I think the next EP could have a "rangefinder" EVF with the smaller&classic shutter&IS unit, allowing for a decentered viewer. Well, that's my hope.

Just my 2 cents,

S.

Hi Sylvain,

Thanks for replying. I have just seen http://fourthirds-us...550/9180001.jpg a sliced E-M5. There is nothing which suggests that the "centered hump" is required for the better IS unit - though we don't know unless we hear an Olympus statement.

I assume the "faux dslr" style is due to the E-300 not selling but the E-500 being quite a success. They were essentially the same camera (apart from tweaks in the firmware).

Your argument about giving the next E-P is interesting. Anyway, with the price of the E-PL5 having gone up over the E-PL3 and the E-M5 having come down in price there is presently not enough space for another model. So an E-P5 coming later might have some mileage. We will see.

What I learned about the E-PL5 so far, not having a second dial, possibly no orientation sensor and a simplified IS is putting me off a bit of the one.

Thanks again

I'm a bit confused is there a bigger deference between e-p; epl and epm ?

I have some contacts in Japan that work in the camera division of Olympus. I think the new Pen is coming. Specifically I've been told a new Pen with a finder is coming and that finder will be significantly better than the current offerings. Notice that Epson just announced a higher resolution version of the finder Oly has been using. I can't give you a time frame, but I think it's coming.

I like the new Pen releases though. With the E-M5 sensor they'll be a nice second body once they start to hit the used market here. I wish they used the E-M5 battery though and I have a feeling a new EVF is coming. I hope it can use the same connection and not require an upgrade like Panasonic did in the GX1.

Joachim, thanks for the picture, nice one.

Still I'm not sure you can "read" much of that cutout image. I do remember reading during the whole "hum" story that the hum came from the gyroscope and/or some parts related to the new IS unit located in that hump. When you hear it, it just comes from that hump. I'll try and find old posts about it but I must agree it's nothing 100% confirmed though.

But what I see here is how many lenses are involved in the EVF. The whole unit is as deep as the body depth.

Hi you2

Thanks for participating. Depends a bit on what you want & need. The way I view it: the key differences are in the build and the user-interface. The E-PM line is geared towards easy automated use, while the E-P line is geared towards those which seek more control.

If you set the camera to all-auto on day 1 and leave it there, the differences are most likely not so important. Key issues for me with the E-PL5 is the lack of the second dial under your thumb and, according to the first reports, the lack of an orientation sensor. I understand the latter implies you have to rotate all images manually. This is 2012 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

HI Sylvain,

If it is that gyroscope you are referring to, I am wondering whether one could place this in another part of the body. Unlike a GPS, I don't think that needs a free view of a satellite or so.
