Martin MM, Klaus' comparison does have merit.
Ferrari's are not very good in most respects. Not much interior space. Lousy view around. Awful fuel consumption. Very uncomfortable ride. No luggage space to speak of. Unreliable. Very noisy, very expensive. All in all, not great cars in most respects. But they do some things rather well:
Go around corners very fast, look kinda special. Their (mostly) iconic styling makes them objects of desire to some. They are a niche product, for a certain clientele.
Leica M cameras do not do certain things well either. No live view (till now), No AF, not so great higher ISO performance (till now), not the most ergonomic design, not the most advanced computer inside.
But they do some things rather well:
Discrete small package, ideal for certain reportage/street photography. Some of the lenses offered are really rather special, and give a lovely feel to the resulting images. They iconic design makes them an object of desire to some. They are a niche product, for a certain clientele.
Of course, they are not for everyone. Just like large format cameras will never be for everyone. Or the different medium formats. Or mirrorless cameras with an EVF. Or bulky DSLRs.
