I think Martin_MM puts it in the right light. To add to that; the Ferrari argument kills itself when tou compare it to a Porsche that is reliable, keeps price like no other car, does all the things a Ferrari can do, only better for under half the price.
Today the Fuji EX-1 has comparable IQ, better ISO range and excellent optics for 30% of the price. Or the Nikon D600, being able to use all the older Nikon lenses back to AI-S lenses, plus all the modern ones with excellent video mode and equal or better photo IQ. The difference in size between a D600 with a 35mm f2 and a leica is not that big and discretion wise, I doubt whether anyone wil see the difference in low light in a crowded street. And you can shoot with the Nikon much later.
To me it comes down to snobbery, which exists, but the Leica business model only works for he company, not fo the users, while Nikon is an overall win/win.
