Well, then we should maybe talk about those different purposes. The D800 is a great tool for those who don't need high frame rates and need the high resolution. That's fine for landscapes (in daylight) and high end studio work, people or products.
However, in the studio you should make sure to have lots of lights (constant light, not flashes) when you plan to use Live View, for example when using tilt/shift lenses. The same applies when shooting night landscapes. In Aperture Priority mode (usually used here) the camera stops down to the chosen aperture, which as you surely can imagine results in a quite noisy Live View image (in low light, it's close to unusable). Mounted next to a 5D III with its crystal clear Live View image, the difference is frustrating.
For many photographic purposes, like sports or generally action photography, the D800 is simply too slow and for many has way too much resolution (I simply don't want to handle such large files, I usually already consider the 24 MP NEFs of the D3x as too large).
The 5D III on the other hand is spec'd to cover most photographic needs well, be it studio, landscape or action photography. Well, at least on paper, it does have its share of issues, too (like reaching its maximum fps rate only under certain conditions).
If forced to get along with only one camera to cover as many photographic needs as possible, I would certainly prefer the 5D III over the D800.
