The answer is Macro lens. They are designed for that.
In this rang you have – Canon 50 and sigma 50 if you are in crop sensor you can choose Tokina 35 macro.
If the following word speaks to you:
low light photography
shallow DOF even with bigger subjects.
nice bokeh
Maybe the answer is fast prime e.g Canon 50/1.2 Sigma 50/1.4 Canon 50/1,4. Canon 50/1,8 .
In any other cases the ansewer is zoom – there are excellent zooms in this range 17..18-50..55/2.8 or 24..28-70..80/2,8
As popo mentioned before 40/2,8 is fantastic lens within its specification. The problem is that therere are
1. fanatstics 2.8 zooms in this range
2. incredible good 50s macro and low light diamonds.
3. If you need WA lens you have to search for <35mm . That is what most photgrpahics book and wikipedia say about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide-angle_..._mm_format
