New camera, new lenses and new technology

That's hardly a surprise as it is a lot slower.

In my 20 years of shooting I had two copies of it and have used several others. With all due respect, that is nonsense. I was actually quite amazed to witness how good it performs, especially when one remembers its super-cheap price and primitive design. In his test Klaus also noted : "The AF speed is pretty fast".

Very likely.

Again, that's hardly a surprise as it is a lot slower.

It is a lot more compact because it is a pancake design, not because it is f2.8. Of course, if you want to look at it with an angle, it is f2.8 because it is a pancake design.

I was not talking about the speed of the AF in the 50mm f1.8, but the low accuracy. Also, it is the most noisy lens.

So, not only does the 40mm f2.8 have a much more compact design due to its pancake design, it will focus more accurately, it will focus silently, it has rounded aperture blades and it will do live view contrast AF well, something the Canon 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.8 are not very good in. Quite a lot of plus points.

The plus points for the 50mm f1.8 are the even cheaper price and the wide aperture. Its downside is the crappy build (and crappy AF).

The 35mm f2 has a focal length advantage on APS-C (normal lens), possibly smoother bokeh (most pancake lenses do not have great bokeh). And 1 stop aperture advantage. Downside the noisy-ish AF, internal construction with a slight problem that can jam the focus, and 5-sided highlights when closed down.

All in all this 40mm f2.8 STM seems to be a very nice lens both on APS-C and on FF, and if the bokeh is better than average for a pancake design, it should be a big seller.
