Can't see this being a big seller, but as a "we too" gesture, why not? It'd look awesome in shop cabinets.

possibly this might work better on the nex7 than the 16-50 - <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

.....i have something 500 going @ 1/30 the price.... but it's only f/8

System completeness is a big seller for the prospective system acquirer, even though he/she 'll never get 80% of the lenses.

I doubt any 500/4 lens from any manufacturer sells in huge numbers, other than more body owners will tend to mean more lens sales. Sony needed this, and there will be many who will be happy it is now available and will get it. Despite what some older fanboys might say, you can't live off Minolta lenses forever and there needs to be a modern choice.

Having said that, I suppose there is a bigger question what Sony's plans are regarding the alpha vs E mount going forwards.

Certainly there are some more pressing deficiencies in the Sony A system (outdated fast 35 & 50s, for instance)? Of course, the 35 is a niche lens as well, but far less so than the 500/4. Oh well. The new 50 is rumored to be around the corner as well.

well as an alternate point of view and a diversion here ..... i don't know why canon nikon sony haven't just joined the mft crowd instead of doing their own thing - too small a sensor/can't change the lens/too big lenses or they don't work - seems silly to me -

surely the more the merrier, think of all the lens designers you could have - maybe it's just a handicap race and there're giving the little guys a head start

I see no good business sense for Sony, Canon, Nikon to join m4/3 format. Oly/Pana already have a somewhat ok range of coverage between them, so why would you try to wrestle a piece of an existing small pie? You have bigger potential gains (as well as bigger risks) by doing something different. The NEX bodies has its charms, even if the lenses aren't really there yet. The 1 I think is technologically the best mirrorless system right now, but they need time for refinement to really show its full potential. And more lenses would help too. I'm still waiting to see what Canon does, but the big sensor compact is not a mirrorless system alternative. It is just a big sensor compact.

I think only smaller players or platform agnostic players have anything to gain from joining m4/3 at this stage. And even then, they're just fighting for the crumbs. A niche within a niche.

..... yes of course you have these points - but i was just thinking more players might make for more and better lenses in a competitive smaller system..... so the niche might become something more.....

- aps-c it seems to me has always needed aps-c size lenses - maybe sony can break the mould but so far i'm seeing big lenses being carried around the street sometimes with a nex on the back sometimes something else - no matter, looks much the same size to me - surely the body weight is not so very different......

- yes v1 seems good for focus and competence - just imagine how much better it would be as a phone too .... sorry, size joke...... and anyway i'm glad to see that thom is beginning to enjoy the darker picture now too....

- but yes, thinking further about it, it possibly is best for CNS to keep away, at least now there is a chance for others to have a go......so please disregard everything i've said.....don't read this CNS......it was a stupid idea, i'm a fool.....please everyone return to talking about the slightly larger matter of 500G's

Indeed.

But the replacement for 35/1.4 & 50/1.4 are long overdue.

And many users are waiting for 70-200/4.
