Sure. I've spent nearly 40 years in manufacturing, at all levels of seniority.
The calculation and allocation of manufacturing costs to different products is often complex, often arbitrary.
However BMW, for example, manage an extraordinarily varied product range. If all the avilable car extras are included, the possibilities are virtually endless. And other carmakers do this too, of course. And they make money.
I do hear what is said about the extra costs associated with the D800E. But compared to the complexity of BMW et al, frankly, Nikon's problems in making one marginally different version of one camera are small - unless there are very many other components which are changed in the D800E. But I doubt that there are.
Yes, they ask for it because they can get it.
And I'll probably smile and pay ! (one day when I've saved for it)
