I see Nikon.com website has a 'question & answer' piece with 3 of the D800's designers
A bit contrived, but some interesting morsels of info - particularly about gunning for MF teritory.
Under 'Products and Support' go to 'imaging Products' then 'History and Technology' then 'Behind the Scenes'

The most interesting part for me.
Some may think that the D800 is the successor to the D700, but we were looking to bring the world a whole new category of camera.
So please Nikon, bring us D4 sensor in D800 body, a legitimate D700 successor.
Even poll at NR suggests that more people would like D4 sensor in semi-pro body than this 36MP, link.
