As expected <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

This will be interesting times ahead, since Canon and Nikon never had so closely related and competing models.

I'm more excited about the new lens, though. And a little disappointed they did not extend the Nikon 1 portfolio.

The new 85mm will cost around 500$... Yummy!

OTOH, the new D4 has more exciting specs:

"91k pixel RGB sensor"

"11 focus points are fully functional when lenses with a maximum aperture of f/8 are used."

"Precise focus can be quickly acquired with autofocusing using all AF NIKKOR lenses, even under lighting as dim as −2 EV (ISO 100, 20°C/68°F), the level at which the scene through the viewfinder can just be made out by the human eye. "

... and all with the same old "advanced" 3500FX CAM AF modul...

Smart move by Nikon. There was a lot (really a lot) of whining in the German Canon forum (dforum.de) from the nature shooters about the f/5.6 AF limitation in the 1Dx (well, the 1Dx prototype).

Depending on the configuration of the FA sensor itself, Canon could actually do this too. They widened to AF field (something other photographers whined about to want to have) which made f8 with all AF points impossible. So maybe Canon can "add" f8 to a select number of central AF points too.

Taping one of the contacts on the lens will give you f8 focussing anyway, so it it not the biggest deal.

The 1D-X and D4 are indeed closer than ever in basic specs. 10 fps vs 12 fps is not a big difference (provided the cameras both do this speed consistently with AF tracking), 16mp vs 18mp is not a big difference either. Funny to see how both have wired LAN connection now, too.

Two very nice PJ/sports cameras..

Well, the 1D series has always provided AF up to f/8 on the central AF sensor (but only this one). Widening the AF field shouldn't have any influence on this feature.

With the D4 specs out now, Canon may reconsider that feature (if still possible).

The price of 5800€ has been announced in France!! Cold shower maybe, but the price will come down. Nikon Passion (French forum) also announces the Nikon D400 and D800 in early spring! So there is still hope not having to turn to bankruptcy court to get one of these!<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

I was hoping a D800 tagged around 3.000 - 3.500$, but I guess I should change my expectations... Nevertheless, when it comes to the "spring mood", I guess I will find a way to convince my wife to get one <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />...

It does influence it, depending on where the actual sensors are located. That is the thing... the sensors themselves are not right "under" the locations of the AF points you see in the view finder.

It is anyway more about reliability than being able to, to enable f8 or not. So maybe the decision not to "include" f8 is about the new performance of the new AF logic, and f8 would make it less reliable in comparison to f4 and f5.6.

The AF sensor grew considerably, from 15 to 19mm wide.

You can anyway get f8 to AF by taping one pin. But with the reliability not guaranteed by Canon.

I am sure it will be around that mark, as it will be positioned to compete with the 5D mk II follow up.
