ultra wide lenses for Canon 1000D
#1
Hello everyone!

I am writing this post since I am looking for a good ultra-wide to use with my Canon 1000E.g.

I am quite a novice but I would like to have a good lens which I could use with more expensive aps-c.

I like prime lenses (I've got canon 35 and 50 mm...).

has anyone some suggestion of a very good ultra-wide lens ?

Thanks!!

There are no real wide angle prime lenses for APS-C (which is not a huge problem).

The 50mm is a short portrait tele focal length on APS-C, the 35mm a standard prime. A 24mm like the Canon 24mm f2.8 and a 20mm like the Voigtlander f3.5 SL II are very moderate wide angle lenses, nice for street photography but not at all "ultra wide".

The widest prime lenses you can consider:

* Canon TS-E 17mm f4 L, manual focus tilt shift wonder but very expensive.

* Samyang 14mm f2.8 manual focus lens.

For APS-C, an UWA zoom is a "better" choice. There are 3 lenses I would consider:

* Sigma 8-16mm DC. Nothing goes wider (except fisheye lenses) and has good IQ to boot.

* Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 DX. Very sharp, only need to correct the CA at times.

* Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM. Don't forget to order its not-standard lens hood.

I have to make a mention of the Samyang 8mm fisheye, even if a fisheye wasn't specifically asked for. Cheap for a lens and you don't get much wider than that easily.

I'd also go with Brightcolours' suggestions except I'd say if you did go Canon 10-22, skip the hood as they're practically pointless on anything half wide.

I might throw in the Sigma 10-20 variable aperture model for consideration if you're on a budget.

I concur with these comments. The hood of the 10-22 is so wide, it's just a pain to carry around, so it stays at home. The Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 is a reasonable alternative for lower budgets.

I liked the old Tokina 12-24/4. The newer 11-16 should be great. You might also stumble by a Sigma or Tamron 14mm but if I had been on APS-C I would've chosen a zoom instead.

The hood is wide, but main reason for a hood is lens protection (plastic bumper). I say: get one.

The "old" 12-24mm f4 has a design fault, effectively bricking them after some time. Which is NOT recognized by Tokina as a design fault which they should repair under extended warranty. So, better skip that 12-24mm f4 Tokina.

It's down to personal preferences (and paranoia) but the physical protection given by one on ultra-wide angle lenses is minimal. I find they're nothing more than a waste of space and, if bought separately, a waste of money too.

Many have saves their lens with that useless piece of plastic acting as crumple zone/bumper. My 70-200mm f4 L USM is one of them (fell/tumbled off a flight of stairs, stopping on the concrete with cheap carpet floor below... Lens hood split on the side, lens is healthy). My 12-24mm f4 from Tokina was happy it had a hood mounted one time too.

Do get the hood.

i use hoods on all lenses, except the 10-22, which is a pain, the tokina 12-24 hood looks better and smaller
