NEX 7 lenses?
#1
I saw the recent NEX 7 review on DPR, and I must admit I'm kind of intrigued. The sensor looks like a real winner, and the body looks pretty decent too. What I'm not sure about is what sort of lenses would shine on that 24MP sensor, and still result in an ergonomic kit.

Most of the lenses tested here looked fairly mediocre on the original NEX 5, and the NEX 7 is going to be much more demanding. Some of the A mount glass looks pretty good, but they all seem to be fairly large, and with the adapter they'll be even larger. The 16-35/2.8 for example looks great on APS-C, but I don't think it'd make any sense on a NEX-sized body. Even the primes like the 85/2.8 seem like they might be too long (once the adapter is factored in).

So I'm curious - what are the best lens options for the NEX if sharpness and size are the main concerns, either native or adapted? I'm particularly wondering in terms of covering the almost-ultra-wide (20-25mm EFL), normal (45-55mm EFL) and tele (90-130mm EFL).

Thanks,

Well, I'm thinking of the Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 for my use on the NEX 7. The 12mm will give you some problems but it is fairly sharp for an ultrawide - and it's small.

As for the EA-LA2 is concerned - the Zeiss 16-80mm (440g) should be decent and the Zeiss 85/1.4 is not exceedingly heavy (560g) and big either. The AF may be a bit dated but it's certainly fast enough here.

It would be interesting to see one of the Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 lenses tested on NEX. Might have a more moderate characteristic then it's sister 12mm? At the very least, they are stop faster and quite a bit smaller, especially the screw-mount version:

VL12/5.6 M d75xL67mm, 230g

VL15/4.5 M d59x38mm, 156g

VL14/4.5 S d50x31mm, 105g

The screw mount version also focuses a bit closer (0.3m) than the bayonet version (0.5m)

If you are happy with manual focus, there are infinite choices. As for native lenses, a standard "G" labeled

zoom was promised for 2012. Not details yet. There is also native 50mm F1.8 OSS, and expensive Zeiss 24mm F2.8.

Actually, 12mm sounds maybe too wide for a lot of things. But won't color shift be an issue?

Regarding the 16-80 and 85/1.4, you find them ergonomically useful? I have an Olympus right now, and the mid-sized 4/3 lenses really don't work well with the body. The NEX-7 seems to be even smaller.

Not really a fan of manual focus, except at the wide end where one can usually just set the distance scale, stop down to f/5.6 and forget it.

Regarding native lenses, the 50/1.8 OSS might be a good lens, but the focal length is strange. A bit short for portraits but way too long for a normal walkaround. I wonder what the idea is.

I would be worried that the 12-15vl lenses are going to have very poor edge performance at infinity. There has been a few tests on alternative forums that show the edge test even with the 28mm G lens the issue shows up. Naturally with slr lenses (what is the bloody term for the different design between slr wide angle and rangefinder angles) this is a non-issue.

Here is a thread on the G21 (on nex 7):

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1...3#10204299

-

There were a couple of sample images of the G28 on nex7 on flicker but I can't find them now.

-

The 5n tends to have a bit less smearing or colour fringe in the corners; but the nex7 audio has no clicking noise when doing videos <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

-

I it is fairly easy to correct the fringing (luminous landscape has a step by step process) but naturally this won't fix the smearing. Also if the bulk of the images are non-infinity then this is less of an issue.

The SLR wides are usually retrofocal designs. The rangefinder ones are symmetric. Since sensors don't do so well with off-axis light, the symmetric ones tend to have more issues.

Hmm... Interesting. Don't care about video. Do care about smearing. Why must the most exciting cameras always have major caveats... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I may have a suggestion in one of the following reviews ...
