I mean all the stuff that you (or whoever took the photo) wrote on the slide years ago when it was fresh in your mind. That information should go with the digital copy somehow. I have all sorts of slides from 40 or more years ago. If there's nothing written on the slide then 90% of the time I haven't a clue what it's a picture of, who's in it, where it is, all that sort of thing. Some processing labs stamped a date on the slides and numbered them. Those things are clues to what it was a picture of and which picture comes first or last.
When I copied my slides I wrote all that stuff on a piece of paper as I copied them. Then I transferred the information onto a spreadsheet with the file name so I could correlate things. That method is pretty crude, but it worked for me. As long as the spreadsheet gets saved with the digital files, I'm good. If they get separated, all bets are off. Ideally the information should go INTO the digital file. Jpg format can store comments, and that would be one way to do it. Another way would be to put the digital image into an editing program, add white space on one border, and write text onto it.
This is most important when your slides are photos of family members. When some of the older members of my family died, they left a box of old photos of older family members, dating back to the mid 1800's. The ones that weren't written on are just a bunch of old photos. The ones that identified the people in the photos are valuable family heirlooms. That's worth preserving when you make them digital.
