I know that some people are interested in technical stuff, like CC and dof tables. But for practical photography, I really think that it is better to understand what the lenses do.



Here are a few images and you can see for yourself that you are better off understanding other more important things.



1. Even at this close distance on the 180mm lens at f/3.5, both eyes are plenty in focus. What you should note also is just how blurred the background is.





2. With an 85mm lens also at f/3.5 and the subject slightly further, the bokeh is still very good.





3. Here, even at f/4.5 on the 85mm, things are sharp and the bokeh, still pleasant.







But the most important thing to note, however, is not that the light is seriously good, but that I have a "connection" with the subjects, particular in image 1 and 3.



So Ian, just forget about dof and cc and whatever else is getting in the way. You need to understand how each and every one of your lenses perform, know where to position the subjects with appropriate backgrounds, and most of all, you must work out (sometimes quickly) how to connect with the persons you are shooting.
