Gets worse with smaller wildlife...

I happen to now a similar model <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
This was 85mm@f/2.8 on FX, subject distance around 1 meter. And no fence <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Only a minor part of the owls face is in focus. In fact, DOF is already too thin to fully cover both eyes (owl eyes are quite large and deep).
