So, why is this a big deal?
It's because PZ has made a conclusion of a lens based on one and only one lens. No one else that I am aware of have such an opinion on the 18-35.
And why am I stuck on just this lens?
It's because if there is this discrepancy with this lens, then how many others are there with doubtful conclusions?
It's not good enough to say "Well, no one else wants to send us their copy for testing". If everyone else is saying "Hey, we think there is a problem with your sample", PZ should get it checked out or somehow get another sample before sticking on a one star rating.
In one of the verdicts of this lens, PZ writes "The lens delivers very good to excellent sharpness in the image center, but that's about all the good news we can report".
They should add "Our conclusions are based on only one sample, but every other person on the planet claims to have a much better copy".

Photozone does NOT test with a D700. You must mean the D7000.
Now on to your warped way of trying to explain things:
Lets examine the results. Would you say the border of the 18-35mm image at 35mm f4.5 (wide open) is in any way sharp? I would not.. in fact, it looks to be very soft indeed. In fact, even the center of your image looks to be quite soft. Are you sure you had it in focus? To go on that result, it probably would score even lower than the PZ test.
On to the 18-55 kit lens result. Also looks rather soft even in the center, again I question if it is actually in focus.
Then to your warped logic. We see an 18-55 kit lens not delivering a very impressive result. Your conclusion: See, the 18-35 is at least similar, so PZ tested a bad sample!

How about: We see your 18-55 kit lens not delivering a very impressive result. Conclusion: seems that either you have a faulty sample, or the camera/lens combination(s) is/are not focussing well.
Neither result would make me think I am dealing with a good lens (ore with good focus).
