There are sample variations. You can get a good copy and another person a bad copy.
You can't expect PZ to buy multiple copies to test it out. It's just too expensive.
If Markus is saying willing to spend a few hours of his time to test your sample, what else can you ask for?
No one is saying that your copy of the lens is bad, but PZ is just not willing to take your word for it and change the language on the review, which is completely understandable.
