No, they should not. The K5 has gotten more praise than any Sony DSLR, it is built very well and is compact and weather sealed. It has very nice ergonomics mostly too. That is the appeal of Pentax (at least, the K5). Only thing Sony does better is the image stabilization.
Pentax needs to build products for professionals. Not that those will immediately sell in huge figures, but it will be a base to slowly build image and a marketing campaign on.

That makes no sense. Pentax' pancake lenses are SLR lenses designed for use with the mirror box. To get rid of the mirror only makes sense if one wants to make the camera more compact. But then the lenses won't work as designed (only very close up). And with spacer/adapter. the combination will not be more compact. Just lousy to handle.
No, Pentax does NOT need to make a mirrorless system for the Pentax pancakes. the Pentax pancakes only make sensoe on a compaact DSLR body. So what Pentax then needs is a compact DSLR body. APS-C: K5. FF.... a K5 body.
