I own the Alpha 55 SLT, and I confidently claim its EVF is able to show the scene depth much like the OVF does.
It just depends on whether the viewfinder resolution is enough to cover the specific scene. E.g. indoors, in a medium-size room, the EVF exhibits "3D look" that's hardly distinguishable from that of an OVF. When I point the camera out of the window, it's a different story though, it just cannot cope with too wide and too detailed view, and the depth is indeed lost. I do hope it's a matter of viewfinder resolution, and the A77 should already be better.
