I think its a damn clever move by canon (and nikon, too) to make the flagship, which is predominately used by sports- and press photographers specialised on low noise /high iso shooting, while maintining at least a decent pixel count (canon) to allow for croping. I think it is alos great to put more MP in the lower body (5d Mark X, D800), where it is needed, eg. for landscape and studio shooters. In a studio environement neither 1D build quality nor Af is needed while the landscpe shooter will be greatful for the reduced size and weight. BTw: With improved sensor technology a 36 MP 5d or D800 should still have better noise performance than todays models 5d Mark II or D700. Of course they will not be able to do ultra high iso, but I seriously doubt that many people need those, apart from sports shooters who need extremly high shutter speeds in low light. I do a lot of reportage photography with my 5d Mark II and i am totally satisfied with iso 3200. If the next model can deliver the same quality at iso 6400 i wont complain, because I cant imagine that i ever need higher isos. But I will certainly appreciate the higher MP count for gallery prints.
remember: ultra, ultra high iso are about as crazy as ultra ultra high MP counts. both are hardly ever needed by anybody yet everybody wants one or the other.
