Hi Arv,
This is my opinion - but I'm a traditionalist, so you should balance these views with some of the other members here.
Your version looks like it's been over-processed to me - the sky is too blue for the time of day and the shadow areas are too light (HDR effect).
The whole beauty of shooting into the sun is that you can create dramatic shadows and silhouettes - and I think that's what Ian was aiming at in these shots. So if you use an HDR computer effect to over-lighten the shadows, you kind of destroy the original idea - and the point of shooting at that time of day.
I know we don't all have time to sit for days waiting for the perfect moment like Ansel Adams did, but I think that the choices at the time of exposure should be the basis of your processing later on: so that you go home thinking "I have captured a great shot today", rather than "I made a pretty average shot, but I can make it look amazing in Photoshop".
Like I say though, that's a question of approach, and we're all different in that regard.
