Hi Arv,

This is my opinion - but I'm a traditionalist, so you should balance these views with some of the other members here.

Your version looks like it's been over-processed to me - the sky is too blue for the time of day and the shadow areas are too light (HDR effect).

The whole beauty of shooting into the sun is that you can create dramatic shadows and silhouettes - and I think that's what Ian was aiming at in these shots. So if you use an HDR computer effect to over-lighten the shadows, you kind of destroy the original idea - and the point of shooting at that time of day.

I know we don't all have time to sit for days waiting for the perfect moment like Ansel Adams did, but I think that the choices at the time of exposure should be the basis of your processing later on: so that you go home thinking "I have captured a great shot today", rather than "I made a pretty average shot, but I can make it look amazing in Photoshop".

Like I say though, that's a question of approach, and we're all different in that regard.

Hi Ian and Pinhole,

thanks for comments. I do agree about the fact that shooting into the sun can create shadows and silhouettes, however that depends on time of the day. In this particular shot IMO sun is too high yet, and it doesn't work well. My approach was not emphasizing features of "sunset - silhuettes" type of shot, but making "midday - harsh light - beach" type of shot with highly saturated colors, what happens if you shoot not into the sun but when sun is from behind. Of course, sun shouldn't be in the frameSmile. The idea was to say, that if you are somehow not satisfied with your shot, you can try to make it look completely different. However I agree with Pinhole, that taking a shot one should get what he wants, and not what it gets.

From technical side, I haven't applied HDR, sky color was changed with grad, then played with WB, colors and contrast. Calibrated monitor has left me <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> , but generally it was more to represent the different mood.

Ian, I thing that last colored version is the best one. Anyway I would shifted color temperature to the left <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> .
