D800 rumor - 36mpx FX (!!)

It has 99% probability so it will be true....

Hmm, I´m the one from the group of "being bitterly disappointed"...that Nikon is going to leave the "low pix/great high iso" attitude for the "the more pixels, the better" <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

Makes no sense! 36MP and 4FPS. Neither is credible. If you had said 18MP and 8fps I might have given it some credence. I also do not believe that they will bring out a successor to the D700 before they renew the D3. Rumours have to be credible to get following!<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I'm not so sure. Not that I take NR too serious, but 36MP might make a lot of sense once the 5D Mark III is out (from a marketing perspective, not necessarily a user's view) and 4 fps is not too far from the current 5 fps of a D700 (body only).

I still have hope though that its just a rumor, even if the chances are down to 1% <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

hum, assuming for a minute this was true I sincerely hope that this sensor can realize a real resolution gain . Lookin at sonys new 24mp camera I am absoltly unable to discover more detail compared to an 18MP 7d (dpreview studio samples from RAW). Just the noise level was increased.

The MP count makes sense. 36MP on a full-frame sensor has roughly the same pixel pitch as the 16MP APS-C sensor found in the D7000. It's probably cheaper for Nikon to use the same sensor design and just cut the wafers larger.

Agreed that the megapixel count is not ridiculous or breathtakingly ahead of the cutting edge. For example, a "full frame 35mm" sensor would have to be about 54 megapixels to equal the pixel density of the latest Sony A77 and Nex 7's (not yet in production) 24 megapixel APS-C smaller sensors.

At 36 megapixels, with perfect 35mm lenses (of which Nikon makes several), we'll be talking a seriously light weight, compact challenger to the Pentax 645, and even lapping at the shores of Phase I back quality territory. A 36 megapixel image downsized 50% to 9 megapixels should give gorgeously smooth, sharp 13x19 inch enlargements, which is as big as anyone's ever paid me for.

I suppose Nikon simply has to use the sensors Sony provides. Unless they partner with Samsung <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Actually if we calculate it based on the 4,76 micron pixel pitch of D7000, it would be a 5042 x 7670 MP sensor (in case the FX sensor will be 24 x 36mm exactly), which is ~39MP. This means, if the rumour is correct the new FX sensor is a new design (with ~4,9 micron pixel pitch)... I personally think it could have less MP count with a brilliant SNR and DR/tonal range... But regardless of the rumour, I believe the new D800 will be aimed for the MP battle with 5D-III (unfortunately).

OTOH, compared to the 36 (or 39mp) resolution, I care more about the other specs:

- price (3.000 - 3.500$ would no more place it in poor man's FX body class)

- 100% VF

- better AF (AF in D700 is already very impressive, frankly I'm very excited about what could be improved here)

- better button design&placement (e.g. dedicated Lv button)

- don't care about the fps

- sensor dust protection

- HD video is a nice to have (as long as it supports various fps values with fast AF)

Likely.

The 5D III is supposed to have ~30mp so rather of staying behind (on paper) Nikon may wish to be "ahead" this time.

Sony has discontinued the A850/A900 now so they will release a new sensor for the successor - which may also be used for the D800 then.
