It will not be a failure. On the contrary, it will be a huge success.
Look at it this way: this is the new digicam...or lets say, the new digicam replacement.
The sensor's of small digital cameras are so tiny that the cell phones are having them for breakfast. So they need a sensor which is better, but not so better <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' />. So this is it then, Nikon V1, a camera better than the cell phone, and your typical digicam. Future perfect, and a big affirmation from one of the leaders that the digicam market is going to die (in not so near) future.
In reality, the camera sucks, what with a tiny sensor and not-even-a-me-too product, but unfortunately, weather this will succeed or not doesn't depend on it being a great camera. To that extent, this is a pure marketing led product launch and has nothing to do with photography.
From Nikon's perspective, this makes sense. The average joe is not looking for a great camera from photography perspective. Consumer is largely unaware of the SNR ratios and the intricacies of sensor sizes. Nikon is a great brand and consumers will go with that.
In the end, this is a differentiated product. At one end, tomorrow, this will fight out with the cell phones and compensate for the lost revenue from the lucrative but set-for-shrinking digicam market. At the other end, this will eat into the sales of MFT, because it will not be so worse than them, actually almost similar from a image quality standpoint.
But most importantly, today, this will save the day for their APS slr's, from the onslaught of mirror less.
Personally, i think by buffering their APS line up with this system, Nikon has bought some more time. But eventually, they will have to make a real photographic tool, a large sensor mirrorless camera.
