The (non)sense of hyperfocal distance

This method assumes a flat focus field. Better make sure that you apply it only for qualifying lenses ...

I am still confused. When I foucus at infinity, then the depth of field is from the hyper focal distance to infinity, according to the usual DOF theory. But according to the Merklinger method, anything bigger than 2mm (for a 20mm f/10 lens) from the nearest to the farthest will be sharp or clear. But, for anything from the nearest to the hyper focal distance it is out of the DOF and then is not sharp since the geometric dispersion of a point image is larger than the circle of confusion, including a subject larger than 2mm. Am I misunderstanding something here, or the sharpness of a photo is a subject concept so if an object looks sharp (by Merklinger) is not really sharp "technically" by the DoF theory? Or something like the subject is sharp on large scales but not sharp on small scales?

Perhaps it is deos not make much sense to investigate the subtle technical difference and what is important is that which method can give you the photo effect that you want.

Best regards,

Frank
