I think it's still OK to use HFD, but if you like sharp pictures it will need to be a couple of stops narrower that they typical DOF values engraved on lenses. It's a matter or trial-and-error here, especially where the exact infinity point and field curvature need to be taken into account. Backcountryskier's "poor man's" tilt seems to be helping the new Zeiss 35mm f1.4 focus on the palm sapling in the foreground here:
